Start with when it leaks

Trace where the water may have travelled
Water may run along felt or timber before it drops. A stain near a window or chimney can sometimes have started well above it.
Check again after the repair
Plaster and timber take time to dry. If the area becomes wetter during the next spell of rain, the roof needs another look.
